Especiallyin this episode, the political side story so overwhelmed the romance that it felt as if the succession story was the main plot, and DongJoo and Nokdu were mere "extras" (a shout out to "Extra-ordinary You") to move along the plot. Take the introduction of the Royal Edict to the plot.

. Well I finally watched Tale of Nokdu. I have ignored it 100s of times before on Netflix. I was just looking for a light comedy show and decided to watch this show just because the supposed man dressing as a woman looked SO PRETTY in the poster that I couldn't believe it! My man out here looking so beautiful I was shook! I basically went into the show with 0 expectations but damn it was so good that I was so hooked by the end and just kept binge watching the episodes! JUST A DISCLAIMER THAT THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD! Some of the main highlights of the show Pretty woman - I don't mind gender bender shows but some of them are just not executed that well and I haven't watched one in ages. This one though was so believable! The ML dresses a female to enter the village, the FL dresses as a male and they were all quite convincing to me. Also the 100% bellyaching laughs that come with the logistics of trying to not be a pervert while also not letting your cover be blown off was just chef's kiss. Character developments - I loved how Nokdu remained Nokdu till the end. Just a well meaning guy who is trying to figure out his past and helping people along the way even if he doesn't have to. He was such a refreshing ML, he spoke his mind, confessed his feelings and would just cry when he was sad, something not a lot of sageuks have. The FL also had a great journey from being entirely invested in her revenge to trying to cope with the alternative of forgive and forget. She also didn't just get in the way of the ML and saved him a ton of times, sometimes by helping him keep his female cover, and later on with that cool loading bow thingie which she made to kill the king. I also very much liked the romance in the show. It felt very real. They went from strangers to roommates to friends to finally liking each other. Their chemistry was really nice and they looked like they were having a lot of fun even in the behind the scenes videos! 3. Lack of false hopes - There is a certain level of wanting happiness for all the characters everytime you watch a show. This feeling is much more prevalent if you have multidimensional, grey characters who do bad things but also sometimes do good things. That is what I felt for both the second ML YulMu and the King. I am so thankful that they mentioned that YulMu is the prince who ends up becoming the next king, because that eliminated all the will Nokdu become the king theories for me. The only way this was possible is if the current king was killed so the main basics of the ending were mostly known from the start, it's just the execution and the roles of our main cast that was remaining to be unfolded. 4. The ending - I was actually very much happy with the ending. The king got what he deserved, what he very much feared and the reason why he killed almost everyone in his corner. The plot twist at the end with the prince saying he was born on November 19 was one I did not see coming. The prince himself also just decided to give up on Dong-Ju and let her and Nokdu finally just live. Also the main cast with all the widows, Nokdu and family and later the queen just living chill, worry free lives is the best possible outcome. Nokdu never intended on being the king, whether he killed him or not, helped in the revolt or not, the throne was never something he wanted. In fact the opposite was true, he never wanted something that could turn him into a crazy, fearful and vain person like the king. Nokdu was just such a good person that he said the words the king needed to hear that he wanted to steal the throne so the king could rationalize all his regrets and burnt bridges. The king realized that he made a mistake when he saw the prince staring at his throne with lust, but in my opinion this was the king's way to try to make up for the past. The king knew how lonely it was to be at the top, he knew the main couple really well and wanted to protect them from becoming like him. This sentiment is echoed when the prince successfully revolts against the king, with the final words from him being that you will be very lonely. 5. Side characters - Along with the main leads, every show needs a good main group to keep your interest in the show. The widow village was honestly such a cool concept and I loved all of them very dearly. Nokdu was also lucky to have a great support group, with Aeng-Du who is one of the cutest kid characters I've seen, the martial arts master who was one of my fav characters, the other widows and curator Yeon. The one character I didn't like much till the end was Nokdu's brother. I understand that he felt spiteful for his childhood and mother but time and time again he kept going back to the prince even though everyone told him not to. The only redeeming quality for me was when he finally got his head out of his ass and tried to stab the prince and spoke up for Nokdu to the king. 6. Women power - The show had so many badass female fighters, and the whole concept of the muwol corps was absolutely A1. I wish there were more shows that showed elements like this instead of the ladies just being dainty flowers who cry all the time. Them being able to continue saving widows, with the help of our own Lady Kim, just made me plain happy. Finally, the show has a great OST. Even the instrumental tracks used were so good that the show really gave off that old English epic vibes. It reminded me a lot of the background music in games like legend of Zelda and I will be listening to it for a long time. The show started of being quite comedic but halfway through shit gets real and it becomes much more serious, but honestly by then you get so invested in the story that it doesn't feel bad. They were somehow able to keep a comedic slice of life ending for the main cast while keeping a serious historic drama ending for the royals involved. I would recommend this show forever, and I will be waiting and keeping up with whatever shows the main cast come out with because they all just one my heart specially the ML y'all! I've been noticing this trend of non serious historic dramas and I am honestly here for it. rookie historian, Hwarang even though that was a disaster and this show come to mind. I really love this genre, excited to see more of such shows! Till then.... From tomorrow...... I AM YOUR MOTHER GAME CHANGER I TELL YOU!

I wrote this piece for HELLOKPOP which was published on December 23, 2019. Satisfaction or having the lack of it is not a result of fate but rather of the choices men made. The Tale Of Nokdu, behind its romantic-comedy premise, teaches a serious lesson about menâs penchant for power and thinking having it could bring all the things oneâs heartâs desires. The drama clearly depicted a side to humanity that is innate yet abhorrent. It also showed we are have the ability to make choices. Choices that would eventually define how we wanted to live our lives. Both of them were hiding a secret of their own and it only took a matter of time before one secret after another gets revealed. As they got to know each other and Nok Du got closer to the story surrounding his birth, romance bloomed. Little they did know their lives were far more connected. The man who was King did all he could, to the extent of eliminating Dong Juâs family and had his own son killed for the sake of power. Thanks to people who still have their conscience, Nok Du was able to grow into a wonderful person. Enough to have no desire to rule a throne marred by so much blood and evil desires. The Tale of Nokdu Highlights Engrossing Premise The seriesâ premise revolved around a cross-dressing young man who entered a village exclusive for woman in order to know the identity of his familyâs attackers. That alone was enough to capture viewersâ attention. However, from that initial premise, more interesting plots started to open up. I was not actually worried that the impersonating theme would lose its steam because right off the bat the drama laid out the groundwork for the main and sub-plots. I was also glad that they actually brought it back towards the latter part of the series because it has so much to do with Nok Duâs character. It helped him to know the people who would eventually become a part of his family. Him pretending to be a woman has led him to solve mysteries and uncover pieces that has something to do with his birth right. I love how the drama related the story of Nok Du and the other characters. The drama was able to highlight the conflicts well and the charactersâ connections. Watching Nok Du slowly discover his true identity and seeing the pain it caused him after knowing the truth, was heart-wrenching. Looking at Dong Ju consumed by her hate and desire for revenge was so absorbing. Seeing the King slowly losing his hold to power was so satisfying. Knowing that the same fate is in store for Yul Mo was oddly comforting. Engaging Characters I love that Jeon Nok Du was not a perfect hero. Sure he could fight well and knew how to outsmart his enemies, but the secret about his true identity made him vulnerable. His stubbornness caused much of the pain he felt. The father he knew and the one who raised him has been adamant to keep the truth from him, because he knew it would hurt deeply. But as a human being, we always want to know, and I really canât fault Nok Du for trying to find things out. Dong Ju and her change of heart towards the end was an example of humansâ ability to forgive and let go. Yes, she suffered when her family was decimated, and she was left to die with them. Growing up, she dreamed of nothing but to exact revenge to the person responsible for her suffering. While I donât condone her strong resolve to kill the King, I understood her motivation. But that moment she realized he was not worth killing, I liked her character even more. Not all revenge has to end up with someoneâs death because sometimes having them live a life without peace and in constant fear is a lot more effective retribution. Cha Yul Moo and the King did share a similar fate and their greed for power was their undoing. The supporting characters gave the much-needed comic relief and added more interests to the narrative. Drawback Bland Confrontation Scene I know it was a historical romantic comedy drama and action was not the main focus. However, that confrontation/fight scene at the penultimate episode was not as gripping as I would like it to be. Perhaps it was just me being so critical, but I was actually expecting more for that confrontation. They had set it so well from the previous episodes leading to that moment, but it fell flat. I was not so disappointed by it, but the drama really could have done better. Takeaway The Tale Of Nokdu reeled in its viewers with an interesting narrative and appealing characters. But apart from that, the drama also leaves with lessons we all could apply on our daily lives. As humans, we have the tendency to desire for more that often leads to dissatisfaction. It turns that little craving to full-blown greed which is obviously not a good thing. Nok Duâs father has a great vision for his country but his desire for more power blinded him. He wanted a nation that was prosperous and free of any problems. While that was admirable, he thought that as King he was the only person who could do it. This made him covet more as he tightly held onto the throne. His decision to kill his own son based on a prophecy, was the root of his unrest. Constantly living in fear of his throne being taken away, he decided to do drastic things such as killing those he thought a threat to his authority. That was not a way to live because I can imagine how exhausting living that kind of life is. Yul Moo is heading down the same path and that last scene was quite telling; him sitting on his throne, in an empty hall, all on his own. On the other hand, Nok Du and Dong Ju are leading a more flowery road, though not without mishaps because such is life. It was evident that theirs was a simple yet happy existence. Far from the dirty politics and bad memories of the palace. It was their choices to forgive and leave that kind of life behind in exchange for a quiet and peaceful life in the island. Life is never easy, and it is not supposed to be. But whatever challenges it throws our way, we only have the power to change it and live through it. The choices we make are the ones affecting and influencing our existence. It is possible to have the contentment we seek if we learn and choose to accept that we could not have it all. Set in the Joseon dynasty, the series is about a man who disguises as a woman to enter a mysterious women-only village in search of the truth about his birth; and a young woman who does not want to become a kisaeng in pursuit of revenge for her this drama ended, it left me feeling so happy. Every Korean drama lover knows that the endings can be awful and unsatisfying, but with The Tale of Nokdu, everything finished just right and drama was so enjoyable. The storyline was so fun and so fresh. The best thing about this drama was the acting and the chemistry between all the actors. Jang Dongyoon and Kim Sohyun's chemistry was adorable and admit that I was reluctant to start this drama because I thought it would be like one of those silly watches. After watching Doctor Prisoner which is a quite a heavy watch, I was in the mood to watch a light and fun drama, and thatâs exactly what I found! This drama was better than I could have anticipated. Tale of Nokdu is an amazingly well-told story from start to finish. Itâs an historical watch filled with comedy, action, politics, romance and suspense. It does take a dramatic turn towards the end but the comedy is never too far was the type of drama that got better and better with each episode. Every episode was entertaining and fast paced. If youâre looking for a binge-worthy drama, look no further. It also has a very satisfying ending which has left me feeling very reason for not giving Tale of Nokdu 5 stars is because it didnât blow me away.

Thereâs cross dressing in both. Although, Jang Dong Yoon is more convincing. The romance of both first stems from a friendship. Both male leads are handsome and female leads are young experienced actresses. Both are historical dramas with the similar concept of gender swap with a good comedy and plot. The only difference is in tale of nokdu the guy becomes a girl - ML in The Tale Of Nokdu and FL in The King's Affection, both hide their real idendity - both also end up falling in love - light comedic romance, very funny at times - male and female leads are so natural and confident in their roles, super talented - great chemistry between the leads - strong and smart female lead character - supporting cast are as phenomenal as the main leads - theme is culturally relevant to current times - stunning cinematography - overall enjoyable and entertaining. - both dramas are gender benders with the male lead cross dressing - the female lead is kim sohyun in both - the leads are roommates in both dramas - the cross-dressed version of the male lead has many male admirers and is very popular - both can be classified under the rom-com genre ML poses as a girl to protect himself from people trying to kill him/hunt him down. The strong women of the village become his friends and allies without knowing his secret at first. Both are historic dramas set in the Joseon period and that are more on the lighter side, especially compared to a lot of other dramas set in this time period though the Tale of Nokdu more so than Queen love and war. Both also include hidden identities. As seemingly with all Joseon-era sageuks, there is palace politics involved, however, in both cases the romance is more of the main focus of the show. *!spoilers!* Both also include a SML thatâs planning a coup because he wants to become the king, and in both cases said SML is in love with the FL. Although Haechi is a bit darker, both dramas involve the fight for the throne, they have strong female leads, comedy, romance, and a great story that keeps you clicking the next episode. Both shows > Have adorable male leads who are good at heart. > Smart and mature female leads who are the apple of the male lead's eye. > The male leads end up bringing hope to the female lead. > The relationship between the leads is very balanced. > There's a big focus on romance and romantic moments/gestures; more so in TTON. > Both male leads pretend to be someone else at first deceiving the female lead but for a good reason. > The Female Lead is caught between the affections of the male and second male leads. > Male Leads are seen as an obstacle by the second male leads, who desire to kill them. > Male Leads do not want to sit on the throne. > Male Leads try to keep their families safe. > The cinematography is beautiful! Miki Ogawa yearned to live the life of a lovely girl and moved to the city from the countryside because of this. She holds a job at a fashion mail order company. Miki Ogawa also has a secret. She is transgender. Although she has a pretty woman's appearance, her sex is male. One day, Tadaomi Goto appears in front of Miki Ogawa. They graduated from the same high school. Tadaomi Goto is flustered by Miki's different appearance, but they happen to become roommates. both historical with assasins and powers both about revenge both cannot fight both training to be able to fight secret assasins Has humor, tragedy, love. The main leads have undeniably chemistry. The plot is very good with unforgettable characters. Strong female leads who will fight for justice and not run away from the brawl. Both have Kim So Hyun and the "kings" in both are really similar, both are easily manipulated, weak and horrible fathers TTN was more light and romance focused while RWMR might be more political My Country is a lot more of a tragedy, however, there were similar plot points such as a gisaeng house that is *more* than it appears spies/assassins, a fight for the throne and I think that Nokdu and Hwi main character in My Country were very similar characters. Also Woo Do Hwan as Seon Ho in My Country is literally INCREDIBLE, so I would recommend this drama based on his performance alone anyway. I don't know why but they give me the same vibes for some reason. They're both obviously rom-coms and although Tale of Nokdu is a historical drama it takes a really unique twist to it which makes it feel more modern. I know this explanation sucks, but I promise you won't regret watching The Tale of Nokdu, the best explanation I can give for why I think you'll like this if you liked Extraordinary You is that I felt the same utter adoration and fuzzy feels for both dramas.
